Description
Notes From John
BPM = 137, in 4/4. The chart opens on a rest bar held under a fermata for the “All aboard!…” cue, and the drums come in on flammed eighth pairs, with the hi-hat foot on two and four below the staff, written as two bars and a two-bar repeat. “vibraslap (if possible)” is printed over the second phrase. Guitar In brings the crash and kick under the flams, then a long sixteenth run and the first hi-hat sixteenths. The Verses ride hi-hat sixteenths with the snare on two and four, the kick mostly on the quarters, open-hat circles near the bar ends and short snare fills into the next phrase. The Choruses are marked “hi-hats loose” and change shape: cymbal on the beat, a syncopated kick figure, open-hat circles, and in a few bars snare and crash together on the quarters over sixteenth kick pickups. The Re-Intros mark “hi-hats normal” to bring the sixteenth groove back. The Bridge at 2:30 returns to the flams and adds sixteenth-note triplet figures marked 3, written as a bar and repeats counted to four. The Solo at 2:44 moves to cymbal quarters over the snare on two and four. The Outro brings the Bridge figure back under “Ha-ha-ha…”, and the last bar is two crash-and-kick eighths on the downbeat. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.
For the player
Lee Kerslake plays drums and vibraslap on the 1980 studio recording, and John’s chart follows that album version. Count the fermata bar under “All aboard!…” and come in on the flams. Ride each gear change: the hats go “loose” for the Choruses and back to “normal” at the Re-Intros, and the Bridge and Outro trade the sixteenth groove for flams and triplet figures. The vibraslap is printed “(if possible)”, so cover it if your setup has one. At BPM = 137 the job is the feel.
