Description

Notes From John

BPM = 102, in 4/4, from a one-beat pickup of snare sixteenths marked mf with the sticking “R R L L”. The Intro prints its sticking over its first bar, then runs the groove of hat, snare and kick with x notes below the staff, sixteenth snare figures and two-bar repeats. Verse 1 at 0:33 keeps the Intro groove under “The Problem is…”, and Verse 2 ends on a circle mark. The first Chorus at 1:15 comes in at f under “You just slip…”, with kick quarters under offbeat hat eighths, circle marks and a bracketed snare note, and it goes back to mf as the Verse groove returns. Verse 4 ends on a quarter rest. The second Chorus repeats the f groove with grace notes, circle marks and a bracketed snare note, goes back to mf for the Verse groove, and the chart ends on a quarter rest. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.

For the player

Steve Gadd plays drums on the track. Drop back to mf at the end of each Chorus, where the Verse groove returns. At BPM = 102 the job is the feel.
