Description
Notes From John
BPM = 84. Drum machine and samples adapted for a live kit. Basic groove; choruses (and elsewhere) the samples spruce it up.
For the player
Programmed cut — no live drummer on the album track — hit it cold. Stay under the vocal; serve the riff, don’t thicken it. John adapted a drum-machine / sample part to a normal kit: the base groove stays simple, then chorus samples (and elsewhere) spruce it up — play the thickenings as written, don’t invent busy fills over the Omnichord loop. Slight shuffle feel on the 16ths — lean into it, don’t straighten them. Open hats are marked — bark the opens where John wrote the circle (Verse 2 fill ~bar 48; Instrumental). Chorus at 1:28 is open-handed when needed, with rim and ghosts marked — leave the ghosts quiet. Intro opens (“Hoo hoo hoo…”); Chorus at 0:13 (“I ain’t happy…”). Verse 1 at 0:42 (“Finally someone let…”); Chorus back at 1:28. Verse 2 at 1:56 (“The essence, the…”); Chorus at 2:42. Interlude at 3:10 (“My future is…”); Instrumental at 3:56 rides the sample-spruced groove into the end hit. Accents, flams, and repeats stay as written. Listen first; at BPM = 84 the job is the feel.
