Description

Notes From John

BPM = 137, in tab with rhythm stems and chord names. After the fermata bar for “All aboard!…” and six bars’ rest, the guitar enters with an F#5 marked “distortion”, an open-string chord marked “feedback” and a P.S., then plays the riff from Guitar In. The Verses follow the open-A pedal under E/A and D/A shapes with “slight P.M.”, and the Choruses add bends marked “full”, pull-offs and “Harm.” over the F#5 and D5 shapes. The end of the second Chorus climbs the neck in pull-offs grouped in nines. The Solo at 2:44 is written out: runs marked T, H and P in groups of five, six and seven, a passage marked “w/ bar” with “dip to -1, back up”, bends marked “full” on the “g string”, and triplet and sixteenth runs up to the 21st fret before it ends on a held E at the 19th. The last Chorus marks “Harm. on g string” and climbs to the 21st fret in bends and pull-offs. The Outro ends on F#5 under a fermata. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.

For the player

Randy Rhoads plays guitar on the 1980 studio recording, and John’s chart follows his lead lines from that album version. Take the Solo in pieces: the T, H and P marks, the bar dip and the bends are written where they fall, and the tuplet groups show how the runs divide. At BPM = 137 the job is the feel.
