Description
Notes From John
Capo 4 tab at BPM = 111, with the treble-string lines written inside the fingerpicking. The moving notes sit mostly on the 1st and 2nd strings, open or at the 1st fret relative to the capo. Hammer-ons are marked in many bars, mostly open to 1st fret on the 2nd string, and a few run across the barline into the next chord. Pull-offs (P) join them from Verse 3 at 1:38. The four-bar Intro opens with a triplet in its first bar. The Re-Intros at 0:44, 1:28 and 2:12 and the 16-bar Outro at 2:59 are the sections where Dylan’s harmonica takes the lead on the record. Accent marks fall on two C chords, at the end of the 1:12 Chorus and in the 1:28 Re-Intro. The last bar runs hammer-ons through C/G and F, then ties into a six-string C/G chord held under a fermata.
For the player
On the 1963 record Dylan is the only guitarist, so the lead line and the accompaniment come from one pair of hands. Capo at the 4th fret. Hit it cold: the Intro starts on the first beat of the first bar. Play the hammer-ons in time with the picking, and give the Re-Intros and Outro the same attention as the verses, since the guitar is under the harmonica there. Hold the final chord for the full fermata. At BPM = 111 the job is the feel.
