Description

Notes From John

BPM = 111. This page carries two one-page lead sheets for the same take: lyrics with the chord symbols over the words, and the sections boxed and timed. One uses E, B7, C#m, E/B, A, F#7/A#, E7 and B. The other prints “Capo 4” and names the shapes relative to the capo: C, G7, Am, C/G, F, D7/F#, C7 and G. The Intro is four bars, written as chords by the bar. Verse 1 starts at 0:08 and the first Chorus at 0:26, and the song runs four verses, each followed by a Chorus. Re-Intros marked [harmonica solo] come at 0:44, 1:28 and 2:12, and the Outro, also marked [harmonica solo], starts at 2:59 and closes on E A E (C F C on the capo sheet). The last three Choruses end on a [2/4] bar, the 1:28 Re-Intro has one too, and [4/4] is marked where full bars return.

For the player

This follows Bob Dylan’s 1963 recording from The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, laid out so you can sing it and play the chords. Read the chords straight from the plain sheet, or put a capo on the 4th fret and read the C shapes from the capo sheet. Ride each gear change: the [2/4] bars cut the last chord of a Chorus to two beats, and the [4/4] mark brings the next section back to full bars. The harmonica sections are written bar by bar, so count them through. At BPM = 111 the job is the feel.
