Description

Notes From John

Fingerpicked tab with rhythm stems, Capo 4, BPM = 111, marked “let ring per chords & discretion” at the start. Shapes are named relative to the capo: C, G7, Am, C/G, F, D7/F#, C7 and G. The pattern is mostly sixteenth notes, with a bass note on most beats on the 5th and 6th strings and the treble strings picked in between. Hammer-ons are marked in many bars, pull-offs appear from Verse 3 on, and some muted notes are marked with X. Section boxes carry the record’s timestamps from Verse 1 at 0:08 to the Outro at 2:59, with lyric cues at the start of each verse and chorus. Four bars switch to 2/4: the ends of the last three Choruses and one in the 1:28 Re-Intro. The part ends on a held C/G chord under a fermata.

For the player

Bob Dylan plays this alone on acoustic guitar on the 1963 Freewheelin’ recording, so the picking pattern carries the harmony under his voice. Put the capo on the 4th fret. Stay under the vocal: let the chords ring as marked and keep the bass on the beats through the verses. Count the 2/4 bars at the Chorus ends so the next section comes in on time. At BPM = 111 the job is the feel.
