Description
Notes From John
BPM = 90, in 4/4. The drums wait out three bars, then a snare roll on the last eighth, marked mf, leads into the groove: hi-hat eighths, a “cross-stick” on two and four, and a kick figure with a sixteenth pickup, written as a bar and repeats. Verse 1 drops to mp under “Sometimes I feel…”, and the cross-stick carries through the first Pre-Chorus and, after a snare roll marked f, the first Chorus. Verse 2 is marked mf and the second Pre-Chorus f, still on the cross-stick. From the Chorus at 2:07 the snare takes two and four in its place, and the Solo keeps that groove. The last Pre-Chorus drops to mf and goes back to the cross-stick under “Would you choose…”, then a bar rest and a cymbal roll under a crescendo hairpin lead into the final Chorus, marked f. The Outro rides the snare groove under “Do-do-doo, do-do-doo…”, and the chart closes on a bar rest. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.
For the player
John’s chart follows the album version of “Drive” from Make Yourself (1999). Stay under the vocal: the Verses sit at mp on the cross-stick, and the printed dynamics climb through mf and f as the song builds. Watch for the move from cross-stick to snare at the Chorus at 2:07, and count the bar rest before the cymbal roll. At BPM = 90 the job is the feel.
