Description
Notes From John
BPM = 112 (dotted quarter), in 12/8. After a short opening bar of rests, the Intro is hi-hat alone for three bars. The snare comes in with eighth notes on the last two beats of the fourth bar, with a kick on the final eighth and an open-hat circle on the last hat note. The groove starts on the next bar: snare on beats two and four, a long-short kick figure mostly on all four beats, and hi-hat eighths around them, with a hat note in parentheses in many bars. The kick accents are printed on the beats in that first groove bar, with “continue accents on beats” written under the next. Many sections are set up by a bar with snare eighths in the last two beats. The Bridge at 1:35 puts the three-note hat group with the bracketed note on both snare beats, and the Instrumental at 2:00 drops to quarter-and-eighth hats for twelve bars. The Solo arrives at 2:30, and the Outro at 3:35 closes on a crash and kick on the downbeat of the last bar. Section boxes run Verse 1 0:26, Chorus 0:43, Re-Intro 0:56, Verse 2 1:05, Chorus 1:22, Bridge 1:35, Chorus 1:48, Instrumental 2:00, Solo 2:30, and Choruses at 2:48, 3:00 and 3:22.
For the player
The track credits list Manny Elias on drums alongside LinnDrum and Oberheim DMX programming from Ian Stanley and Chris Hughes, and John has written the part out for a live kit. Count the hi-hat bars at the top so the snare lands in the fourth bar. Ride the downbeat: the chart marks the kick accents on the beats and asks you to continue them, with the snare on two and four. Follow the hat changes where they’re printed, at the Bridge and the Instrumental. At BPM = 112 the job is the feel.
