Description
Notes From John
BPM = 118, in 4/4. The drums rest through the Intro, its first bar held under a fermata, and through the eight bars of Verse 1. The Pre-Chorus enters at mp on a tom figure with a “rim” click, the kick and the hi-hat foot, in phrases that end on a bar rest. The Chorus arrives at f: hi-hat eighths, the kick on the quarter notes and the snare on two and four, with open-hat circles at some phrase ends, a tom fill partway through and crossed-circle marks on the hat in its closing bars. Verse 2 at mf pares it down to kick quarters, with a snare pickup at the end. The second Pre-Chorus sets cymbal hits over the kick quarters and closes on a tom run under a crescendo hairpin. After Chorus 2 the hat moves to accented sixteenth figures, with open-hat circles at some bar ends. The last Pre-Chorus at 2:18 rests three bars before a short figure on the floor tom, and the final Chorus at 2:26 puts the hat in straight sixteenths over the same kick. The last bar closes on a triplet fill and a snare hit under an open-hat circle. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.
For the player
Kid Harpoon plays drums on “Flowers”, and John’s chart follows the single and album version. Ride the downbeat: once the Chorus starts, the kick holds the quarter notes while the hat moves from eighths to accented sixteenths around it. Count the rests through Verse 1 and the last Pre-Chorus, and keep the dynamics where they’re printed, mp for the first Pre-Chorus and mf for Verse 2. At BPM = 118 the job is the feel.
