Description
Notes From John
BPM = 163, in 4/4. Intro A opens on the hi-hat, marked “hi-hats loose”: sixteenths across the first two beats, then a hat note and a snare note, counted as four bars. Four bars of snare sixteenths follow, then four more that end on a kick and crash with a breath mark. The groove after that puts the snare on the quarter notes under the cymbal with the kick between, grace notes on the later beats in some bars, and “smaller cymbal” marked in its first bar. That snare-on-the-quarters pattern returns at the Re-Intro (2:19) and the Bridge (4:03). The Verses and Pre-Chorus B move to hi-hat quarters with the kick mostly on one and two and the snare on three. The Choruses (2:08, 3:34, 5:03) are a snare figure that opens with a grace note and ends on a two-note hit. The chart marks the snare wires: “s.o. – snares off” for the sixteenth-note snare bars that close Pre-Chorus A and the Bridge, and “s.n. – snares on” at Pre-Chorus B. The Interlude at 3:46 marks snares off after its first bar and has an open-hat circle in its pattern. The Outro at 5:15 changes to 3/4 at BPM = 122, starts on a triplet snare figure with a bracketed middle note, moves to cymbal eighths, and the last bar is a crash and snare on the downbeat. Section boxes run Intro B 0:36, Verse 1 1:05, Pre-Chorus A 1:29, Pre-Chorus B 1:44, Chorus 2:08, Re-Intro 2:19, Verse 2 2:31, Pre-Chorus A 2:55, Pre-Chorus B 3:10, Chorus 3:34, Interlude 3:46, Bridge 4:03, Pre-Chorus B 4:39, Chorus 5:03 and Outro 5:15.
For the player
Lars Ulrich is the drummer on St. Anger, and John’s chart follows the album version. Start on the hi-hat with “hi-hats loose” as printed. Watch the snare wires: the chart takes them off for the sixteenth-note snare bars and puts them back on at Pre-Chorus B. Ride each gear change: the snare-on-the-quarters sections, the hi-hat Verses with the snare on three, the Chorus figure and the 3/4 Outro at BPM = 122 are written as separate patterns. At BPM = 163 the job is the feel.
