Description

Notes From John

BPM = 86, in 4/4. The Intro is marked mf and “rim or claps,” with a flammed note on two and four. The Beat In at 0:11 switches to “hi-hats loose”: hat sixteenths, the snare on two and four, a syncopated kick and a crash on the downbeat. Verse 1 brings back the rim or claps figure, then moves to “hi-hats normal,” with accented hat sixteenths and bracketed hat notes in between. The Chorus is marked f and returns to the loose hats, with crashes and snare fills. The Tags print “step hi-hat optional,” with the hat foot written under quarter-note cymbals. The Down Bridge goes back to accented sixteenths on the hat and closes on a crescendo hairpin. The Build Bridge at 2:30 starts at mf, with the kick on the quarters and a flammed snare, then moves to tom sixteenths and crashes under a hairpin into the Build Chorus at f. The Outro is five bars of rest. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.

For the player

John’s chart follows the album version from Hymn of Heaven. Follow the hat calls: the chart marks the hi-hats “loose” or “normal” at the section changes, and the sound changes with them. Play the stickings where they’re printed in the Chorus and Tag fills, and read the bracketed hat notes in the “normal” sections as printed between the accents. At BPM = 86 the job is the feel.
