Description
Notes From John
BPM = 60, in 6/8, counted in dotted quarters. The Intro is marked p and played on the toms, with the hi-hat foot on the second beat of the bar, and Verse 1 at 0:08 keeps that tom figure. The kit comes in on the way into the Chorus, marked f, and the Chorus carries the printed instruction “accents on 1 & 4 throughout”: hi-hat eighths, the snare on the second beat and the kick mostly on the first, with bracketed snare notes and open-hat marks in many bars. Verse 2 at 1:16 drops to mf and adds “buzz on snare” strokes, with a crescendo hairpin and printed stickings in the fill into the second Chorus. The Bridge has more sticking marks in its fills. The last Chorus adds flams and tom fills, then a dim. and a rit. take it down to the final bar. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.
For the player
Dan Needham plays drums on the Arriving recording, and John’s chart follows that album version. Feel it in two: the tempo is marked for the dotted quarter, so the bar has two big beats, and the Chorus accents fall on 1 and 4 of the six eighths. Play the buzz strokes in Verse 2 where they’re printed, and take the dim. at the end as written. At BPM = 60 the job is the feel.
