Description
Notes From John
BPM = 154, counted in eighth notes. The Intro is four bars of rest in 4/4, and the drums enter at Verse 1 in 6/8, marked mf, on a drag into a crash: hi-hat eighths and sixteenths, the kick on beat one, the snare on the fourth eighth, and bracketed snare notes between them. Many verse bars add a note marked “tambourine”. Verse 2 closes on a crescendo hairpin into the Chorus at 0:49, marked f, where the hat picks up open circles and crossed-circle marks and many phrases end in flammed fills across the toms. The Re-Intro moves to 4/4 at mf for three bars, then one bar of 3/4, before Verse 3 returns to 6/8. The Interlude is marked “accel.” and leads into the Bridge in 4/4, which brings in sixteenth-note kick figures and a six-note fill. “a tempo” brings back the 6/8 at the 3:12 Interlude, which opens on a crash and then rests. The last two Choruses lead into the Outro, which ends on a rit. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.
For the player
Mike Malinin plays drums on the record, and John’s chart follows the 4:50 album version. Track the meter changes: the chart moves between 6/8, 4/4 and 3/4, with a single 3/4 bar before Verse 3. The tempo is marked for the eighth note, so the 6/8 sections feel like two slow beats to the bar. At BPM = 154 the job is the feel.
