Description
Notes From John
BPM = 118. Swung. The bass waits out three bars of intro, then walks down from A into the first verse. The verses are roots and fifths, with short eighth-note pickups into each chord. Diminished passing chords push the turnarounds along. The last chorus ends on a held D.
For the player
This is the 1957 Decca cut. The line is mostly roots and fifths, so every note has a job. Wait out the intro, then hit it cold on the walk-down into the first verse. Keep the swung eighths short so each pickup leads into the next chord. Save the extra motion for the triplet fills late in the tune. At BPM = 118 the job is the feel.
