Description
Notes From John
A clean guitar part in tab, 4/4 with swing eighths marked, at BPM = 118. The intro is a double-stop figure at the 14th to 17th frets with a half-step bend. In the verses the guitar rests under the vocal and answers with short two- and three-note fills that slide down from around the 15th to 17th frets. The pre-choruses mix chord stabs with palm-muted single notes, the choruses add triplet double stops over B7 and sliding E9 chords, and Verse 3 at 1:11 is a palm-muted line low on the neck. It ends on a held Dmaj13.
For the player
Hank Garland is credited with the electric guitar flourishes on the fills of the 1957 session. In the verses the guitar waits out the vocal lines, so stay under the vocal and let the fills land in the gaps. Get the half-step bend in the intro exactly to pitch, and follow the P.M. marks where they start and stop. At BPM = 118 the job is the feel.
