Description
Notes From John
Four-string ukulele tab, 4/4 at BPM = 118, with swung eighths marked. The part is strummed chords with down and up strokes marked on many bars. After three bars of rest, an A7 pickup starts on an up stroke and leads into Verse 1 at 0:07. The verses move D to Dmaj7 to D6, then through D#°7, Em7 and A7, and Verse 1 has a rolled A7 marked. The pre-choruses at 0:39 and 1:27 go G, G#°7, D and E7, then stop on a short A strum with rests before the A7 pickup into the chorus. The choruses at 0:55 and 1:43 run D, Dmaj7, D6 and B7, then G to Gm and back through Em7 and A7. Verse 3 at 1:11 closes on D to D7. The chart ends on a D chord under a fermata.
For the player
This is a strum part for Bobby Helms’s 1957 single, written for four-string ukulele. Ride each gear change: the verses move D to Dmaj7 to D6, the pre-chorus moves G to G#°7, and the chorus moves G to Gm. Play the up strokes where they’re printed, keep the eighths swung, and leave the rests after the short A strum. Roll the A7 where it’s marked, and hold the last D. At BPM = 118 the job is the feel.
