Description
Notes From John
Tab only, 4/4 at BPM = 146, with swing eighths marked. The part is a single-note line on the low strings, marked “clean, start palm mute”, that plays eighth notes on the roots of G♭, E♭m, A♭m and D♭ with slides into some of the changes. The pre-choruses break into shorter staccato figures over B♭, E♭m, A♭m, A♭ and D♭. The first pre-chorus ends with “end palm mute” and a bar of triplets that builds to f. The 0:34 chorus is marked “start palm mute.” The choruses put dead notes (X) between the roots, and some passages move through G♭, Gº7, A♭m7 and Bm. The guitar rests through the 2:10 chorus, then comes back, and the outro at 3:02 returns to the eighth-note line.
For the player
The palm mute and the dynamics are printed, so follow them: on at the intro and the 0:34 chorus, off for the triplet bar before the first chorus, and mp, mf and f as marked. Ride each gear change, especially the triplet build before the 0:34 chorus. Keep the dead notes short so the roots stay clear, and count the eight bars of rest at 2:10. At BPM = 146 the job is the feel.
