Description

Notes From John

BPM = 123, in 4/4. The drums rest through the Intro and enter at Verse 1, marked mp: hi-hat eighths, “cross-stick” on two and four and the kick on one, written mostly in two-bar repeats. The verses close on a fill at mf, with flams on the snare and toms over sixteenth-note kick pickups. The Pre-Chorus at 0:39 opens on a crash and moves to the snare on two and four with a busier kick, and its last bar builds under a crescendo hairpin. The Chorus is marked f and opens the hats, with open-hat circles over quarter notes, the snare on two and four and flams at the turnaround. The Re-Intro at 2:32 drops back to mp and the cross-stick groove. The last Chorus ends on a crash and kick, followed by rests. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.

For the player

Dave Grohl plays drums on the Nevermind recording, and the song article notes the track was recorded to a click track. Play to the click: the tempo is printed at quarter = 123, and the chart holds it from the mp verses to the f Choruses. Switch from cross-stick to the snare where the Pre-Chorus starts. At BPM = 123 the job is the feel.
