Description

Notes From John

BPM = 76, in 4/4. The Intro starts on a half-bar rest, then hi-hat sixteenths at mp with accents and crossed-circle hat marks, and the kick comes in on one and three. Verse 1 keeps the sixteenths and prints “continue accents”; its second half is marked mf and adds the snare, and the verse closes on a sixteenth-note snare fill at f. The Interlude at 0:36 opens on a crash and moves to hi-hat eighths, the snare on two and four and a kick figure of an eighth and two sixteenths. Verse 2 adds bracketed snare notes and an open-hat circle. The Pre-Chorus moves the kick to dotted-eighth figures, and its fills carry flams. The Choruses keep the snare mostly on two and four, with grace-note figures in the fills. Verse 3 drops to mf, and a crescendo hairpin builds into the last Pre-Chorus at f. The Outro at 3:10 brings sixteenth-note snare runs with flams, and the last bars are marked rit. into a final crash and kick. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.

For the player

Mick Avory plays drums on the record, per the song article’s Personnel. Play the hat accents as written: the Intro and Verse 1 mark them over sixteenths at mp, and “continue accents” keeps them going until the snare enters at mf. Let the dynamics move from mp to f as printed, and follow the rit. into the last crash. At BPM = 76 the job is the feel.
