Description

Notes From John

BPM = 126, in 4/4. The Intro is marked f and “cross-stick”: hi-hat eighths, cross-stick on two and four and the kick on one, the and of two and three, with an open-hat circle at the end of the Intro. Verse 1 keeps that groove, written as one bar plus repeats. The Chorus at 0:40 opens on a crash and moves from cross-stick to the snare, mostly on two and four, and each Chorus breaks for two bars of crash-and-kick quarters with rests. Verse 2 is marked “accents on hi-hat” and “continue accents”, and the accents get denser before a short tom fill into the next Chorus. The Solo at 2:13 goes back to the cross-stick groove with extra kick notes and has the same crash stops. Verse 3 is marked mf, and a crescendo hairpin leads into the last Chorus at f. The Outro has one more set of stops and ends on a crash and kick. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.

For the player

Kenny Buttrey plays drums on “Margaritaville”, per the album’s liner-note credits. Play the stops on the crash: each Chorus breaks for two bars of crash-and-kick quarters with rests, and the Solo and Outro do the same. The verses stay on cross-stick as marked, and the hairpin leads into the last Chorus at f. At BPM = 126 the job is the feel.
