Description

Notes From John

BPM = 121, in 4/4. The Intro opens on an mp pickup marked “open-handed when needed”, then sets the groove: hi-hat eighths, the snare on two and four and the kick on one and three, written as two bars plus repeats. Verse 1 keeps that figure. The first Pre-Chorus is marked mf and puts the kick on the quarters under the hi-hat eighths, with snare and open-hat notes at the phrase ends. The Choruses are marked f and “hi-hats loose”, open with a crash and keep the snare on two and four; Verse 2 returns to “hi-hats normal” at mf. The second Pre-Chorus adds open-hat circles and grace-note flams. The Bridge at 2:20 moves the hands to snare and tom eighths over hat-foot quarters and closes on a run of flams. The last Chorus at 2:56 starts with “hi-hats normal”, builds from mf with “cresc.” and “very close flams”, and returns to f and “hi-hats loose” to the final crash. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.

For the player

Keep the hat foot on the quarters: in the Bridge the hands play the snare and toms while the hat foot keeps quarter notes under them. The hats are marked “loose” in the Choruses and “normal” in the verses, so the hat sound changes with the section. At BPM = 121 the job is the feel.
