Description

Notes From John

BPM = 173, in 4/4. The Prelude is nine bars of rest and a snare hit at f on beat four. The Intro at 0:14 is hi-hat quarters with a crash on the phrase starts, the snare on two and the and of three, and a syncopated kick figure, with a sixteenth snare fill and a flam at the phrase ends. The verses are marked mf and are built from flammed snare notes and snare-and-tom eighths over a kick figure, with open-hat notes at bar ends. The Pre-Chorus moves to hi-hat figures with open-hat notes and closes on a bar of bracketed sixteenth snare notes under a crescendo hairpin. The Choruses are marked f: cymbal quarters with the snare on two and four, then open-hat quarters over the kick on the quarters, and a flammed snare-and-tom fill. The Breakdown at 2:05 is marked mp, with the kick on the quarters under the hat; a hairpin leads to mf, where the snare plays sixteenths marked “snare low” and “cresc.” over kick quarters, with printed accents, into the Solo at f. The last Choruses repeat the Chorus figures, and the chart ends on a flammed snare-and-tom figure. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.

For the player

Start the snare sixteenths low: the Breakdown build is marked “snare low” and “cresc.”, so the sixteenths start quiet at mf and get louder into the Solo at f. The verses carry flams on the snare, written as grace notes. At BPM = 173 the job is the feel.
