Description
Notes From John
BPM = 133. This page carries two lead sheets for the same recording, each two pages: lyrics with the chord symbols over the words, and the sections labeled and timed. One uses G#m, B, D#m7, F# and E. The other prints “Capo 4” and names the shapes relative to the capo: Em, G, Bm7, D and C. The Intro is written as chords by the bar, marked “[all but rhythm/lead guitar]” for its first line and “[add rhythm/lead guitar:]” for the second. Verse 1 starts at 0:43 and the first Chorus at 1:19, with Interludes at 0:36, 1:33, 2:38, 3:55 and 4:39 and Pre-Choruses at 2:09 and 4:10. The Re-Intro at 2:52 opens with a four-chord line marked (2x), and the Solo at 3:27 is G#m, B, D#m7, D#m7 marked (4x) (Em, G, Bm7, Bm7 on the capo sheet). The Outro at 5:15 sets “On New Year’s Day” over the same chords and ends on G#m [hold] (Em [hold] on the capo sheet).
For the player
This follows U2’s 1983 recording from War, laid out so you can sing it and play the chords. Read the chords straight from the plain sheet, or put a capo on the 4th fret and read the Em, G and Bm7 shapes from the capo sheet. Stay under the vocal: the verses repeat one four-chord line under the lyric. Count the (2x) and (4x) repeats at the Re-Intro and Solo so the next section comes in on time. At BPM = 133 the job is the feel.
