Description

Notes From John

Tab at BPM = 133, marked “Tune down a half step”, with rhythm stems and the chord names over the staff. The shapes are mostly G5, A5 and C5 in the Choruses and Pre-Choruses, with Em, Am, C, G, F and D elsewhere. The Chorus at 1:19 is marked “no delay, let ring per chords and discretion”, puts P.M. on the A5 bars, and ends with “delay on”. The Pre-Chorus at 2:09 picks the G5 and A5 shapes across the strings in eighths and quarters, with P.M. on the C5 bars, and the Pre-Chorus at 4:10 is marked “let ring per chords & discretion”. Muted X strums run through parts of Verse 2, the Choruses at 2:24 and 4:24 and the Interludes at 3:55 and 4:39, and “end let ring” closes the ringing passages. Section boxes carry the record’s timestamps from the Interlude at 0:36 to the Outro at 5:15, with lyric cues at the verses, pre-choruses and choruses.

For the player

The song is built on the Edge’s piano and guitar on the 1983 War recording, and this page covers the chords and the pattern. Tune down a half step as printed. Serve the riff, don’t thicken it: play the G5, A5 and C5 shapes and the palm muting where they’re marked, and let the chords ring where the chart says to. Watch for “end let ring” where the ringing passages close. At BPM = 133 the job is the feel.
