Description

Notes From John

BPM = 163, in 4/4. The Intro is written as rests up to a flam with an accent, then four bars of the groove with a sixteenth snare fill, printed R/L sticking and accents. Verse 1 at 0:12 sets the groove: quarter-note hats, the snare on two and four and kick eighths, written as a figure plus repeat bars, with many four-bar phrases closing on a short bar of hat notes and a flam on the snare. The Interludes, the first Instrumental and the Outro are marked “hi-hats loose”, and the verses go back to “hi-hats normal”. The Choruses and Interludes add open-hat notes and sixteenth snare fills with accents. The Solo keeps the verse groove in four-bar phrases, and the Outro at 2:33 ends on a bar of hat notes and kick. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.

For the player

Bill Ward plays drums on the track. Switch the hats between loose and normal at the marks, and keep the kick on the eighths under them. At BPM = 163 the job is the feel.
