Description
Notes From John
Tab only, 4/4 at BPM = 152. No swing mark is printed. The part uses open chord shapes: C, a four-string F on the top strings, a full six-string G, and one bar of G7 at the end of the 1:16 solo. The intro holds single strums on C and F, then moves to down-stroke quarters on C. From the 0:07 half chorus the part is mostly steady down-up eighths, with the strokes marked at the start of the sections. The verses, choruses and solo all follow the same C, F and G changes. The 2:31 outro runs the same eighths on C, F and G, then ends on short C hits and a held C under a fermata.
For the player
Chuck Berry plays both guitars on the 1958 Chess single. Stay under the vocal: this part plays steady eighths through the verses and choruses, so keep the down-up strokes even and the changes between C, F and G clean. Watch the intro, where the strums are held before the eighths start, and the short C hits at the very end. At BPM = 152 the job is the feel.
