Description
Notes From John
BPM = 165, in 4/4. The Intro is three bars of rest, then a tom fill: three offbeat eighths stepping down the toms into a flammed snare on beat four, with the kick on the last offbeat. The groove comes in on a crash with the snare on two and four, and many of the Intro hi-hat notes carry the printed open circle. Verse 1 runs eighth-note hats with the open circle mostly at the ends of bars, and the kick moves between eighths and sixteenth pairs. A sixteenth-note snare fill with stickings printed leads into each Chorus, and the Choruses start on a crash. The Breakdown is marked cross stick, with tied cymbal notes and snare triplets. The Bridge carries the “Hey, na na na” cue. The Solo is marked accel. The Outro brings back the “State of love…” cue, then a rit., a freely played run of sixteenths with stickings through a 3/4 bar, and a marked end note on the crash and kick.
For the player
Dave Abbruzzese played drums on the 1992 Singles version, one of his first recordings with the band. Count the three bars before the tom fill, and play the flam into the groove as written. Ride each gear change: the cross stick Breakdown, the accel. in the Solo, and the rit. into the freely played ending are all printed, so follow those marks rather than holding one tempo through the song. Play the open circles on the hats where they’re printed, and use the stickings on the fills. At BPM = 165 the job is the feel.
