Description

Notes From John

BPM = 102, marked “(speeds wavers)”, in 4/4, with a printed swing marking (two sixteenths = a triplet eighth and sixteenth). The Intro is a two-beat snare pickup, and the next bar is marked “hi-hats loose in general”, with hat eighths and sixteenths, printed R sticking, crossed-circle marks over many hat notes and the kick on the quarters. The Groove at 0:12 has an “R L R L” snare figure, then a crash, and the kick moves to dotted figures. Verse 1 adds circle marks and bracketed snare notes. The first Chorus has accents, sixteenth-note triplets with printed sticking and circle marks, and its last bar ends on “straight 16ths”. Verse 2 has a “(rimshot)” mark over a snare sixteenth. The second Chorus has printed sticking, and the Interlude at 2:25 is marked “edge of ride” and “with tip”, with staccato dots and accents. Verse 3 and the last Chorus have accents and circle marks, and the Outro ends on a crash. The section boxes carry the record’s timestamps.

For the player

Stevie Wonder plays drums on the track. Hit the “(rimshot)” in Verse 2 where it’s printed. At BPM = 102 the job is the feel.
