Description

Notes From John

Tab only, 4/4 at BPM = 189, with swung eighths marked and “Capo 4” printed. Chord names are shapes relative to the capo, and they’re open-position shapes: Gmaj7, Em/G, G, Am7, D9, Bm7, Em9, Cmaj7, F(add9), C, D, C/G, Am7/G, Em7/G and D7. The intro and the first two verses set a low note on the 6th string at the 3rd fret ahead of the chord in the Gmaj7, Em/G and G bars. The choruses run Am7, D9, Bm7, Em9, Cmaj7 and F(add9) into G, mostly two chords to a bar. In the bridges, full G chords are tied across the bar alongside C and D, and the first bridge ends with tied C/G, Am7/G and G chords. From the 1:26 solo on, the Gmaj7 and Em/G sections pick up down-up eighth-note strokes. The 2:42 interlude repeats the chorus chords with repeat-bar signs. The 3:22 outro moves through Gmaj7, Am7/G, G and Em7/G over a low G, then D7 into Gmaj7, and the part ends on one Gmaj7 down stroke followed by four bars of rest.

For the player

This is the strum part for Paul McCartney’s 1979 single. Put the capo on the 4th fret, and read the shapes from there. Through the intro and the first two verses, play the low bass note and then the chord as written. Where the down-up strokes start from the solo on, keep the eighths swung. Hit it cold at the end: play the single Gmaj7 down stroke and count the four bars of rest. At BPM = 189 the job is the feel.
